Kitchen and Backyard Composters, Mulchers and Accessories
Cities and individuals around the country are saying good-bye to plastic bags in landfills and making the move to natural methods of disposal, such as composting. Composting recycles organic kitchen and yard waste into an extremely useful humus-like, soil product, permitting the return of vital organic matter, nutrients – and particularly bacteria, that are vital to plant nutrition– to the soil.
Composting is becoming increasingly important and better understood as a tool for reducing municipal solid waste, and reducing the amount of green waste going into landfills. In suburban and rural areas, much of the organic waste could be removed from the waste stream by promoting home composting, where consumers compost their yard waste and kitchen scraps on their own land. In urban areas, indoor composting is a great way to participate.
GreenWorksEStore.com will be offering a variety of kitchen and backyard drum composters, mulchers, and composting accessories.

Solar power jobs in America — Supplied by Chinese company
Green jobs are coming to America, thanks to the world’s largest producer of solar energy products, a Chinese company.
Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd., the world’s largest crystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturer, announced plans to build a new solar manufacturing facility somewhere in the U.S. Why will a Chinese company come to America? Suntech sees:
* dramatic growth in utility demand for large-scale wholesale solar projects
* several states offering incentive programs for customer-owned systems, and
* the federal government’s recent stimulus package.
This combination of incentives sets up “steady, long-term growth in demand,” according to Suntech.
Click here to see Suntech’s announcement.
There should be some good deals ahead for those interested in purchasing solar technology. Suntech clearly sees trouble ahead for the solar power industry, so its move to the U.S. may signal tougher times for American solar companies.
Reason: Suntech’s CEO, Zhengrong Shi, says there’s a glut of solar panel producers on the market today. He predicts prices will fall 20% to 30% in this year’s third quarter. Prices could fall as much as 50% by 2013, he says.

A leading panel of green building experts and the editorial team from Sustainable Industries act as the judges to determine the most innovative products that will help reduce our environmental impact. The products were selected based on their environmental performance, scalability/market impact, innovativeness, design aesthetic, value and compatibility with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system. Read on to find out more about the winning products in no particular order.
Acadia Combined Heating and Cooling System, by Hallowell International
The Acadia system by Hallowell International is an incredibly efficient residential heat pump that comes close to the efficiency of a geothermal heat pump, but at a much lower cost. This heat pump also works really well at colder temperatures, where other heat pumps drop in efficiency as the temperature drops. While it may cost about 30% more than traditional heating/cooling systems, the Acadia will use about 30% less energy.
ec-H20, by Tennant Co.
The ec-H20 is a powerful cleaning machine that can clean almost any surface with just water, which eliminates the need for cleaners. While not useful in a home setting, the commercial scrubber reduces water usage by 70-80%. The machine works by activating water electrically so it acts as a powerful detergent.
InSpire Wall, by ATAS International
This innovative building system technology is a exterior wall that acts as a solar collector for air. The InSpire Wall is installed a few inches from the building’s wall. Air enters through tiny perforations and is heated in the interior space by the sun. The air then rises and enters the building’s ventilation system as pre-heated air, thereby reducing heating costs by up to $5 per sq foot of building space. In the summer, the InSpire wall acts as a barrior to the sun’s heat and vents hot air back out rather than heating the building.
kama EEBS Structural Systems, by kama Energy Efficient Building Systems Inc.
The kama building system combines light gauge metal stud framing with expanded polystyrene insulation to create a tight, energy-efficient building envelope. This metal stud framing system eliminates thermal bridging and has a very high R value. Despite the fact that the polystyrene is still made from petroleum products, the building system is produced and transported efficiently.
Plyboo Pure Bamboo Plywood, by Smith & Fong Co.
Plyboo isn’t the only bamboo flooring out there, but it was the first imported bamboo in the US and is now the first FSC certified bamboo flooring. Since bamboo is technically a grass, it was not considered eligible to be FSC certified, but Smith & Fong lobbied the organization to include it, and because of this it is included in 2009 winners.
RainTube, by GLI Systems Inc.
The RainTube is a rain gutter filter made from 100% recycled high density polyethlyne (milk jugs) and is also Cradle to Cradle certified. Not only is it made from a recycled material, but the product can be recovered at the end of its useful life. The RainTube filters debris from roof run-off so that all the available water can be collected and used. GLI Systems also manufactures rain barrels that work with the RainTube.
Separett Villa, by Separett
This composting toilet separates urine and solids and eliminates the need for plumbing or water. This kind of system is perfect for where no plumbing exists, but is even better for water reduction and also making it possible to reuse the waste for composting and fertilizing. The PVC-free toilet could significantly help reduce disease in developing areas where there is little access to clean sanitation and water.
Serious Windows, by Serious Materials
Serious Windows are incredibly efficient windows made from fiberglass and foam that have full frame R-values from R-7 up to R-11. These windows go above and beyond even Energy Star rated windows and have the potential to eliminate heating systems to rely solely on waste heat from indoor appliances.
Solatube Daylighting Systems, by Solatube International
Solatube has been around for years and has helped many homeowners add more daylight to dark areas and reduce the need for lighting. Recently Solatube has released a commercial daylighting system for larger and commercial spaces, which will improve productivity, decrease absenteeism and improve sales.
Your Old Light Fixture, by Eleek
Eleek is the only company to be on the Top 10 list for 4 years running, which is due to their important business of lighting renovation. One aspect of their company is to take old lighting fixtures and completely restore the fixture reusing most of the parts and only updating the wiring to comply with code, and the lamp base to take CFL or LED bulbs. Their service is not only handcrafted specialty, but also reduces the need for new fixtures.

Houses Made from Hemp
Hemcrete offers low-carbon promise for the next wave of green building.
We've heard of houses made from reclaimed missile silos, dry docked boats, airplanes and even recycled bottles. But hemp? According to the Telegraph some enterprising Brits are doing exactly that with a material called Hemcrete.
A prototype three-bedroom house, funded by a grant from the British Department for Energy and Climate Change, is going on display, part of the UK government's green building push. Boosters say the technique is easily scalable, and hope a wider rollout will soon be possible.
The house is made of Hemcrete, a mix of hemp and lime that's not unlike papercrete. Hemcrete requires half the energy of a traditional brick house. Hemp is a renewable resource that is typically grown without pesticides and with low inputs of water and labor. It also can be grown between cycles of harvesting wheat. Hemp takes up carbon dioxide as it grows, and the builders estimate each square meter of wall removes 242.5 pounds of the gas from the atmosphere.
The hemp house is reportedly cheaper than conventional construction techniques, and the utility bills are expected to be very low.

Antibacterial Soap: An Imminent Threat to Human Health and the Environment?
Groups petition the FDA to ban the use of triclosan, a common antibacterial chemical in hand soap.
Arguing that the chemical commonly used to give antibacterial soap its bite "poses imminent threats to human health and the environment," two groups are petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to have triclosan banned. The Daily Green has consistently recommended against using antibacterial soap (yes, even for parents with young children), primarily because it doesn't achieve its stated purpose (sanitizing your hands) any better than a thorough washing with regular-old soap and hot water … but it does create conditions that allow for the evolution of antibiotic-resistance among bacteria. More recently, evidence has emerged that tricolsan may be an endocrine-disrupting chemical, messing with our hormones. It's found in our blood, and because we dump so much down the drain with each washing, it even contaminates dolphins, according to one recent study.
Though antibacterial products have saturated the market, there are alternatives to antibacterial soap. Triclosan isn't found only in soaps; it's also used in toothpastes, deodorants, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, facial tissues, antiseptics, fabrics, toys and medical devices.
The petition (pdf) filed by Beyond Pesticides and Food and Water Watch (with support from dozens of other groups, including the Sierra Club, the American Bird Conservancy and the Breast Cancer Fund), argues that tricolsan should not be approved for use in consumer products.
"Numerous scientific studies and reports clearly indicate that in addition to its human health and environmental dangers, triclosan is not effective for many of its intended benefits and may actually be doing consumers more harm than good," said Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch. "Even worse, is that current regulations on triclosan haven't been updated since 1994 and much of the science used by the FDA to regulate the pesticide dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s. The agency's inconsideration of new scientific research on triclosan represents an egregious failure to properly protect the public against this dangerous pesticide."
The petitioners make six basic claims:
1. Triclosan doesn't work in consumer products
2. Tricolsan's widespread use increases the chances of harmful bacteria becoming resistant to the drug
3. Triclosan builds up in the body
4. Tricolsan may disrupt human hormones
5. Triclosan can react with other chemicals to form dioxin and chloroform, which are known to be toxic
6. Triclosan contaminates water, affecting marine wildlife and ecosystems
It's useful to remember that triclosan, like other pesticides, is a poison. It's poisonous to bacteria. We may be far removed from bacteria, way up in the evolutionary branches of life, but the common chemistry of living things means that chemicals that affect one form of life often affect others too.
